My freelance work focuses on nature, history, culture, and place. My features, profiles, and news stories have appeared in regional publications such as Isthmus (an award-winning alternative weekly in Madison, Wis.), The Capital Times, Madison Magazine, Wisconsin Trails, The Wisconsin Magazine of History, and On Wisconsin, as well as national publications such as Midwest Living and Horticulture.
I have written about issues of sustainability, ecology, and education, including investigative cover stories on the return of Wisconsin's cougar, Madison's school lunch program, and the benefits of outdoor classrooms and natural play. I'm also fascinated by what is often overlooked in daily life: the mysteries of buried streams, the workings of a child's mind.
In 2011, I received the Kay W. Levin Award for Best Short Non-Fiction from the Council for Wisconsin Writers, for my historical essay "Ne-Rucha-Ja: The Forgotten Tale of Frost's Woods and Charles E. Brown's Fight to Save it for the Ho-Chunk" in The Wisconsin Magazine of History.
Since 2012 I have worked in the College of Letters & Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My UW stories can be viewed here.
